Magabala Books is Australia's oldest independent Indigenous publishing house. Based in the pearling town of Broome in the far north of Western Australia, Magabala Books is one of the most remote publishing houses in the world.

Since its incorporation in 1990, Magabala Books has been recognised as a producer of quality Indigenous Australian literature receiving accolades in prestigious literary and national achievement awards.

Almost a year ago Magabala appointed a new CEO Michelle Broun. Michelle is an Yindjibarndi woman who has worked in the arts since 1989 as a visual artist, a free-lance curator, for local government and the Department for Culture and the Arts.

Recently Michelle attended the inaugural ‘First Nations Australia Writers Workshop’ and  earlier this year Michelle was selected to take part in the Australia Council’s Emerging Leaders Development program. With this professional development under her belt and a passion for the documentation and presentation of our precious Indigenous cultures, it will be interesting to see what Michelle has planned for Magabala Books for the rest of this year and beyond. As Michelle says in her intro to their latest newsletter “We have so many exciting things happening for the rest of the year”
